The author admits this isn't a book for the beginner. It would help greatly to have some experience with 3D printing and understanding of the vocabulary of 3D printing before getting this. However, I think it is a great addition to one's 3D printing library as the illustrations and descriptions make it easy to comprehend. I especially like the use of 3D printing and the process described in designing and printing a part for a chainsaw that was not available otherwise.Product details

I purchased "Zombie Apocalypse" after reading Smyth's other book, "Functional Design for 3D Printing." There's a lot of overlap between the two. If you want to buy only one book, I'd say buy the other one instead.
That said, "Zombie Apocalypse" is an excellent book in its own right. It's focused on using your 3D printer to make real-world parts instead of desk toys. It's a welcome change from other books on 3D printing; I mean seriously, who needs more crap on their desk? 3D printers can be put to so much better use.
A good example from this book is Smyth's repair of a chainsaw that was missing its switch mechanism. (A zombie book can't be without a chainsaw.) He walks you through measuring and making a template, his design for clever spring that's built into the switch, and how to get the slicing software to print the spring in a way that'll make it flex well. This is great stuff you won't find in any other book--including Smyth's own "Functional Design" book.
It's these extra tidbits that make it worth buying both books, in my opinion, despite the considerable overlap. If I use that spring design in one of my projects, that paid for the book right there.
Fun and informative treatise on 3d printing. Covers a lot of ground and some critical concepts. Particularly useful is the discussion about part orientation and functional strength.
Good tips and pointers on reconstructing parts for broken devices. 3D printers excel at this and this book has a chapter that gives a good overview of a step-by-step process for doing just that.
Functional Design for 3D Printing (by the same author) is my go-to book, and this one will get a place on the shelf right next to it.

easy to read and understand....it all makes perfect sense so why have I not thought of it?
a little thin but good read
This book is the perfect companion to Smyth's "Functional Design for 3D Printing". It covers expert topics such as optimizing your print for speed, plastic used, or strength, how to debug your printer problems, and how to design a duplicate for a broken plastic part. The "Appendices" are actually full-blown chapters, with more examples of how to meet your design constraints. It's a solid handbook to mark up and keep by your printer.
The Zombie Apocalypse theme gets in the way at times, causing confusion about whether he's giving a serious tip (using glue sticks for example) vs. elaborating on the theme (scavanging glue sticks from stores).
